This is probably the most centrally located church in Stockholm, close to the Royal Opera, Royal Palace and many other key attractions. A church is known to have stood on the site in medieval times, but this was demolished around the time of the Reformation. The present church was begun in 1580. It has been altered substantially over the years, and a variety of architectural influences are to be seen, including baroque, Renaissance and late Gothic. Sankt Jakob’s Church is dedicated to Saint James the Greater, patron saint of travellers.
