Penningby Castle is one of the oldest non-religious buildings that remains standing in Sweden. There was a fort here in the fourteenth century, which was replaced by a medieval castle in the fifteenth. Some of the medieval defences remain. The great towers of the castle were built in the sixteenth century. The English-style park near the castle was laid out by Countess Maria Juliana von Rosen in 1805. The castle was declared a historic building in 1980. Guided tours are conducted throughout the summer tourist season.
