The Historical Museum in Lund lies right behind the famous cathedral in the heart of the city. The museum was opened in 1805. It contains the second largest archaeological collection in Sweden. The museum deals with human history from prehistoric times to the medieval period. The museum holds Stone Age artefacts from all over Scandinavia, unique Bronze Age finds and many items excavated from Viking sites. The medieval collection contains some outstanding church art, including the famous Madonna from Östra Tommarp, painted around 1300. The museum also holds one of the largest coin collections in the country.
