Långholmen prison, located on one of Stockholm’s islands, used to be one of the largest in Sweden, holding more than 500 prisoners. It was also the site of many executions. It ceased to be used as a prison in 1975. Part of it has been preserved as a museum, where you can see for yourself what the conditions were like for inmates. In addition you can learn more about the fascinating history of the place. Guided tours are available. You’ll find a hotel, hostel, cafe, pub and various other facilities on the island.
