Kalmar Church was founded in the twelfth century and was substantially altered in the fourteenth. Its early foundation is accounted for as Kalmarviken Bay has been an area of settlement and trading for many centuries. The church possesses paintings by the great medieval master Albertus Pictor, who decorated the interior in 1458. Unfortunately, these have not been so well preserved as in nearby churches, but are nonetheless well worth seeing.
