Located on Bjorko Island, Birka Museum is a place frozen in time. Originally a trading post during Viking Times, there has been a settlement here for well over 1000 years. It is thought of as the first town in Sweden, despite being abandoned because of raids by pirates in the 10th century. Birka was a very forward-thinking place in its day, with both Christians and Pagans living there in harmony. Today it is a living museum of sorts, showcasing what life would have been like all those hundreds of years ago.
